The best game I played this year was 2011’s awesome Dark Souls. It’s an experience that doesn’t baby you, barely helps you, and makes you earn your stripes the hard way. I wasn’t sure what I’d think about it when I first played it — and, honestly, I didn’t play much of its predecessor, Demon’s Souls — but in the end, it was amazing. I put it up there with the Mass Effects and Elders Scrolls of the gaming world. And right now, Dark Souls is $13 at Amazon. Even if you’re on the fence, that’s a tiny price for admission. Just go in knowing it’ll be tough, maybe keep a FAQ handy for when you’re stuck, and you may just enjoy it as much as I did.
